The Kyiv National Art Gallery Presents an Exhibition by Anna Kruger-Prakhova
On July 7, the National Museum “Kyiv National Art Gallery” invites you to a unique exhibition project commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Anna Kruger-Prakhova — an outstanding Kyivite, artist, and prominent representative of the city’s German community.
Today, her name is a true treasure for art historians and collectors alike. Anna Kruger-Prakhova was among the first Ukrainian women artists to boldly step into the realm of early 20th-century European Modernism. Until recently, her works were only sparsely represented in state museums. However, thanks to a generous gift from the Ponamarchuk family, the Gallery now holds the largest monographic collection of the artist’s work.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive retrospective — from her youthful drawings at Mykola Murashko’s Kyiv Drawing School to her mature Soviet period, during which the artist balanced ideological demands with her personal style. A special emphasis is placed on her expressive animalist art, where animals are given central, psychologically profound “roles.”
A manifesto from the diary of young Anna (1896): “I would give up even the last spark of my talent to love and be loved with true love, to be a wife and a mother…”
For everyone who appreciates deep cultural meanings, family chronicles, and refined Kyiv aesthetics, the project’s art catalog is available to read completely free of charge.
