First Look: Five Days of Ukrainian Fashion Week SS27, Shot on a Digital Camera
At the beginning of September, Ukrainian fashion once again shifted the rhythm of Kyiv. Ukrainian Fashion Week SS27 unfolded over five days — across runways, historic interiors, Mystetskyi Arsenal, galleries, and locations throughout the city. The collections shaped the official schedule, but the real energy of UFW began before the first model even stepped onto the runway: at the entrances, in the corridors, among the guests, and in the brief pauses between shows.
The season opened with the COAT by Katya Silchenko presenting the Opera collection at the National Opera of Ukraine. Over the following days, both the scale and the settings changed. J’AMEMME brought its runway to the Red Hall of Kyiv Central Railway Station, while Mystetskyi Arsenal became one of the key locations of SS27, bringing together KACHOROVSKA, PASKAL, Katerina Kvit, VIKTORANISIMOV, POUSTOVIT, GUNIA, DARJA DONEZZ, FROLOV, and other Ukrainian brands.
On September 4, the fashion program took on another dimension with the opening of Behind the Craft, an exhibition where contemporary design met Ukrainian craft traditions. At the same time, the city itself was shaping the week’s course. During air raid alerts, VIKTORANISIMOV, DARJA DONEZZ, and VOROZHBYT&ZEMSKOVA continued their shows in a shelter. The runway simply changed location — and the show went on.
The final days expanded the idea of a fashion show even further. Andreas Moskin presented AWAKENING THE SELF as a performance at M17, while SIDLETSKIY unveiled an adaptive collection featuring models with amputations. SS27 concluded with Look into the Future, the competition for emerging designers.
Our camera, however, was looking slightly away from the runway. At people just entering the venue. At the guests and what they were wearing. At movement through the crowd, spontaneous gestures, changing light, blurred silhouettes, and the seconds between one event and the next.
